PC-to-PC is Here!

UPDATE: We now support PC-to-PC on all Windows homebase apps. The PC-to-PC feature is reserved for Polkast Pro subscribers.

We’re really excited to be announcing our Pro version of Polkast with PC-to-PC support. First we gave you direct access to your computer from your mobile phone or tablet. Now Polkast also connects your computers directly, so you can access files stored on your home computer directly from your work PC, and vice versa. That’s a big step forward in our mission to connect all your devices into your own personal cloud.

The PC-to-PC feature is available first on our Windows version. That means you can view files on other computers — including Macs– from your Windows PC. (We’ll upgrade the Mac OS X within a couple of months.) To get the PC-to-PC Access feature now, simply download the latest version of our Windows software, update your mobile apps and click on the Upgrade to Pro button in the mobile app under Settings/Account.

PC-to-PC is a great feature for users who like to keep their work lives and their personal lives separate. Instead of keeping personal files on your work PC in case you need something, our PC-to-PC product will let you simply access that personal file right from your work PC without having to download and store it. We’ll even save any changes you make to your personal file from your work PC back to your home computer. And because we create a direct connection, we give you access to all the files on your computer – not just the ones you remembered to upload to some cloud storage solution.

Another big plus is that you don’t need to store multiple copies of everything on each of your computers like with sync software, so you can be much more efficient with your storage space. And files can be previewed without having to be downloaded. So if you’ve already got limited hard drive space or you don’t want the hassle of syncing with a group shared folder, preview everything, download only what you need.

PC-to-PC is a great solution for anyone needing to share large files like designers, photographers and videographers. It’s a pain having to go through the time-consuming process of uploading files via 3rd party providers, then having the client download the file. Polkast lets you share the file with the client directly. The client can preview files without having to download them.

As a thank you for your support, all current registered users will be grandfathered into the service and will be able to upgrade to the Pro version for free, for life. Starting in June, new Polkast users can upgrade to Pro inside the Polkast application for $4.99 per month or $49.99 with a year subscription.

  2. This looks fantastic! Just to clarify, since I downloaded *before* this Feb will I get to use the PC-to-PC pro features for free for life? I hope so. Exactly what I need to overcome my Db limitations.

    Thx.

  3. Looking like a great service. Can you clarify, if I install and use before Feb do I receive the free pro version for life(“grangfathered in”)?

Can’t wait to start using it. Terrific idea.

Hi Chris, did you get the free Pro upgrade last month? We had a deadline to opt-in, but I neglected to reply here to remind you, so email support@polkast.com if you missed it.

Downloaded your app on my ipad and my windows 7pc and within minutes my yahoo mail account was hacked, now going on day three of getting messages from friends and colleagues saying they are getting spam mail from me. Yes, I have norton antivirus/spyware on pc.

Thank you for contacting us with this issue. We haven’t gotten any other reports of spam, but we are investigating. Please know we take the security of our system very very seriously. We believe our infrastructure is secure. We don’t see your Polkast password, it is stored encrypted on your own system, we just store a hash key — so your password is never in transit. There is a good chance your yahoo hacking is a coincidence, but nevertheless we are investigating in our server logs. We recommend you change your Yahoo password if you haven’t already, and here is also a link to Yahoo’s recommendations. If you would like to email support@polkast.com we can update you, or we’ll just post here again in a couple of days after we’ve completed our server analysis. Thanks again, and really sorry you have a negative association with Polkast.

Does Polkast copy all of the data off the computer to a server somewhere to make it available on other devices or does it keep one copy on the source computer and just reference it from there?

    Thanks,
    Peter.

We simply give you secure direct access to your own computers – we don’t copy your files anywhere. That’s one of the big advantages of Polkast vs. cloud storage solutions. You keep control of your own files.

    Hi Polkast-People :-)

Does your PC-to-PC mean on every PC is a 1:1 Copy? Or is it just a “Link” to a Host-PC…
I have to work with large photos – so I can not download it every time I need the files. At the moment I use microsoft “Live Mesh” – but I have to look for an alternative one… like yours(?)

I just need a good sync-tool over internet – is it possible with PC-to-PC?

    Greets
    Sebastian

Hi Sebastian, we sync an index of your files to each device, and then you download only as needed — i.e., we virtualize your file storage. It’s like having unlimited storage, even on thin mobile clients, without unnecessary redundancies. It sounds like you’re looking for folder sync, which we don’t currently do. But I will pass along the feedback to our product team. I hope you’ll give Polkast a try anyway :-)

P.S. I thought I had replied to you weeks ago, must have missed the “post” button. Sorry for the delay.

  11. Still waiting on the Mac version! Hope it’s out soon. Just upgraded to Pro thinking that would allow me to do Mac-to-Mac. Guess I should’ve done my homework more thoroughly.

Hi Ian, we’re pushing to get the Mac “roambase” out in Q2. Sorry for the wait. I’ll email you when we have a beta version to see if you’d like to try that in the meantime. I expect the feature in beta later next month.
